As we’ve all seen, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a deep impact on almost every facet of life and every industry, including the gambling sector. Land casinos were shuttered, sportsbooks had to contend with a dearth of sports, and we were all forced to stay home and improvise.
Meanwhile, extended lockdowns, job losses, and increased stress in general have all impacted player behaviour, and there is an elevated risk of problem gambling. The UK Gambling Commission has recently released a memo reminding all of us of the need for increased vigilance.

· Please be aware of the risks of problem gambling, which comes not only at an enormous cost to a player’s health but might also lead to the “use of proceeds of a crime” (stolen money).
· There is evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic can exacerbate problem gambling behaviour, and we all need to be extremely vigilant and act in a socially responsible manner.
· Please remember: There should never arise a situation where a player is encouraged to gamble as a way to deal with pandemic-related stress or spend more than they can afford.
